The timed portion

Testing time is 2 hours and 14 minutes. That is 64 minutes of Reading and Writing, split as two 32 minute modules, and 70 minutes of Math, split as two 35 minute modules.

Each module is its own timer. When a module's time runs out, the app moves you on whether you are finished or not, and you cannot go back. There is no way to borrow time from one module to use in another.

Real question

A car travels 60 miles per gallon on average. At this rate, how many miles does the car travel in 4 gallons?

The break

There is a 10 minute break between the Reading and Writing section and the Math section. You can leave your seat, eat, and use the bathroom. You cannot use your phone, and you cannot look at test content.

Inside a section there is no scheduled break between Module 1 and Module 2. The app moves you straight from one to the next, so if you need a few seconds to reset, take them at the start of Module 2 rather than assuming a pause is coming.

The timed test is a little over two hours, but the day is longer.

Check-in and the rest of the morning

The timed test is a little over two hours, but the day is longer. Doors typically open in the early morning and the proctor has to check IDs, seat everyone, get every device onto the testing app, and read the instructions before the first timer starts. How long that takes depends on the size of the room.

A safe estimate is to assume you will be at the test center for about four hours from arrival to dismissal. That is an estimate, not a published figure, so check the admission ticket for your reporting time and add buffer for traffic and parking.

Extended time

Students approved for accommodations get additional testing time, most commonly time and a half or double time, applied to each module. With time and a half, Reading and Writing modules run 48 minutes each and Math modules run about 52 minutes each, which makes the timed portion roughly 3 hours and 20 minutes.

Accommodations have to be requested and approved through College Board's Services for Students with Disabilities well before your test date. Approval is not automatic and the request goes through your school, so start it months ahead rather than weeks.

What to bring for the length of it

Bring a fully charged laptop or tablet with Bluebook already installed and the exam already downloaded, a charger, an acceptable photo ID, a pencil for scratch work, and a snack and water for the break.

Sitting for two hours of focused work is a physical skill. If you have never done a full length practice test in one sitting, do at least one before test day so the last module is not the first time you experience that kind of fatigue.

Questions students ask

3

Can I leave early if I finish a module?

You can stop working, but you stay seated until the module timer ends. Use leftover time to recheck flagged questions rather than sitting idle, since the time does not carry forward.

Is there a break between Module 1 and Module 2?

No. The only scheduled break is the 10 minute one between Reading and Writing and Math.

How long until I get my scores?

Digital SAT scores are usually released within about two weeks of the test date, and often faster. College Board posts the exact release date for each administration on its site.
