SAT Math
44 questions in two 35 minute modules. Algebra and Advanced Math are about 70% of the section, with Problem-Solving and Data Analysis and Geometry and Trigonometry splitting the rest.
Roughly three quarters of the questions are multiple choice and the rest are student-produced responses, where you type the answer yourself. A Desmos graphing calculator is built into the testing app and allowed for the whole section. The provided reference sheet only covers geometry formulas, so everything in Algebra and Advanced Math has to come from memory.
Every math skill the test asks for
Algebra
- Linear equations in one variableSolve one-variable linear equations, including ones with fractions, parentheses, or no solution at all.
- Linear functionsRead, build, and interpret linear functions, including what the slope and the starting value mean in context.
- Linear equations in two variablesWork with lines in two variables: slope, intercepts, and equations built from a real-world description.
- Systems of linear equationsSolve two-equation systems by substitution or elimination, and decide when a system has no solution.
- Linear inequalitiesSolve and interpret linear inequalities in one or two variables, including constraint word problems.
Advanced Math
- Nonlinear equations and systemsSolve quadratic, radical, and other nonlinear equations, and count how many real solutions they have.
- Nonlinear functionsInterpret quadratic, exponential, and other nonlinear functions from equations, graphs, and tables.
- Equivalent expressionsRewrite polynomial, rational, and exponent expressions into an equivalent form without changing their value.
Problem-Solving and Data Analysis
- Ratios, rates, and proportionsSet up and solve proportions, work with unit rates, and convert units without losing track of what each number counts.
- PercentagesHandle percent of, percent change, successive percent changes, and working backward from a final amount.
- One-variable data and statisticsCompare mean, median, range, and spread for a data set, and predict how a change affects each one.
- Two-variable data and scatterplotsRead scatterplots and lines of best fit, and interpret what a model predicts compared with what was observed.
- ProbabilityCompute simple and conditional probabilities, usually from a two-way table of counts.
- Inference from samples and studiesJudge what a sample can support, including margin of error and when a study can claim cause.
Geometry and Trigonometry
- Lines, angles, and trianglesUse angle relationships, triangle rules, similarity, and the Pythagorean theorem to find missing measures.
- CirclesWork with circle equations, radius and center, arc length, sector area, and central angles in radians or degrees.
- Right triangle trigonometryUse sine, cosine, and tangent in right triangles, plus the complementary angle relationship and the unit circle.
- Area and volumeCompute area, surface area, and volume for standard solids, including scaling and working backward to a dimension.
